This page aims to explain why the site's contributors are calling for
a boycott of major US companies, services and products.
But first, some clarification. We have already received feedback that
suggests that we are apologists for terrorists. We are not. Our disdain
for violence of any kind, however, also includes countless American-sponsored
acts of terror against innocent people. It does not escape our notice
that the USA is the only state on Earth to have been convicted by the
World Court of aiding and abetting appalling Human Rights abuses, namely
the horrific events that that occurred in Nicaragua in the 1980s. A
verdict that, predictably, was derided by the US government who refused
to recognise the Court's legitimacy.
The USA's contempt for International Law, treaties and agreements is
another reason we call for a boycott. From Kyoto, to NMD, to turning
their back on a treaty designed to limit the use and distribution of
biological weapons (see BBC
story), the USA's consistent belligerent isolationism makes its
labeling of Iraq and others as "rogue nations" a little ironic.
We also oppose the USA's financial and political support for the state
of Israel's oppression of the Palestinian people.
We do not claim that all of the World's ills are caused by America.
Who to boycott? A total boycott of all American companies would clearly
be impractical, however there are some 'figurehead' businesses that
can be seen to represent rampant and unfettered US capitalism and which
can be targeged in a symbolic protest.
Finally, we have no argument with ordinary American people, but rather
the warmongering politicians and their corporate paymasters.
